OCTOBER 2024 BUDD Exhibition – BUDDOLOGY

Month-long exhibition of material relating to the Newport Mosaics

Location: GALLERY SPACE, Riverfront Theatre, Kingsway, Newport NP20 1HG.

Opened: Friday 4th October 2024. Exhibition dates: 4th – 29th October 2024.

I've just returned from a fabulous weekend in Newport, South Wales.

Hosted by Tamara Froud and Stephanie Roberts, BAMM (BRITISH ASSOCIATION for MODERN MOSAIC). Friday evening BUDDOLOGY exhibition opening, talks on Saturday and a very convivial workshop on Sunday.

I was pleased to contribute a small bird mosaic copying a tapestry to be included in the community project.

We had a walkabout to view the Budd mosaics that could be bulldozed for the regeneration of Old Green... all looking OK apart from the Florist wall but the council haven't cleaned any of the works for a few years now which is a shame.

Saying that they're still there for now and worth a visit. Concrete castings we did back in the 1970's look great now.... like an Aztec temple!

OCTOBER 2024

BRITISH ASSOCIATION for MODERN MOSAIC (BAMM) Event 2024 Newport, Wales, UK.

Friday 4th October 2024 BUDD Exhibition – “Budd-ology”

Month-long exhibition of material relating to the Newport Mosaics

Location: GALLERY SPACE, Riverfront Theatre, Kingsway, Newport NP20 1HG.

Opening: 7.30-9pm Friday 4th October 2024. Exhibition dates: 4th – 29th October 2024.

Newport’s Old Green Underpass Mosaics celebrate the details of life - the everyday, the mundane. Except they are an insight into so much more. They share with us the unsung heroes at work, the emotions and characters of life, with a bit of cheek and humour! They celebrate the colours of life, the interactions, and the joy of the busy-ness of life in an urban environment, all created with exquisite design, materials and mastery of mosaic technique.

This is a new exhibition, assembled and curated by BAMM, about KENNETH AND OLIVER BUDD’S work in Newport, aimed at BAMM members, residents of the Newport area and anyone else who loves the work of the Budds. It has been assembled in association with Oliver Budd and will include archive material that will not have been on public exhibition before. The exhibition will comprise cartoons and drawings, explanation of the techniques behind the mosaics and the materials, and work-in-progress photos.

The Budd mastery of portraying personal connection to people and places or capturing a moment in time will be the inspiration for the 30x30 exhibition of works by BAMM members, illustrating the full range of contemporary modern mosaic approaches

Summer 2024

A public art installation by Zak Ové realised by Oliver has been unveiled in Notting Hill.

Eight colourful mosaic panels resembling a carnival procession dance across the façade of the recently opened Ruby Zoe Hotel & Bar, London.

Best known for his sculpture, film and photography work, Ové collaborated with Oliver to translate photo montages and collages into a composition of monumental vertical scenes.
